Complete system of common liberal subject “Great Books Seminar In Wisdom and Compassion” was changed. The complete credits in “Great Books Seminar In Wisdom and Compassion” decreased from 12 to nine. It means students just can take three courses in “Great Books Seminar In Wisdom and Compassion” unlike existing system where students had to take four courses.
There were some controversies about notifying the changes. The notice was uploaded first in the website of Department of Education on December 21st, not in the website of Dongguk University or Dharma College. Furthermore, since the notice was posted after the winter session was already started, there were students who were taking fourth “Great Books Seminar In Wisdom and Compassion” not knowing that they did not need to take the subject. It caused some doubts about why the notice was uploaded “only” in the website of Department of Education and why the school did not notified that early. Kim Bo-min (Sophomore, North Korea Studies Major) said, “When I heard that we just can take three courses in ‘Great Books Seminar In Wisdom and Compassion’, I thought It could reduce my burden. However, from the view of the students who were taking the winter session, they would be confused because of the notice. I wonder why Department of Education notified that first, instead of school or Dharma College. I think school should be more concerned about notifying something matters to students.”
Regarding the problems, The Students Council of Department of Education notified a statement on their Facebook page, “Dongguk Gyo-uk.” In the statement, it said, “We received an official document announcing that there were some changed points in curriculum, so referred to this when we handled some affairs. There was no mention about when we should upload the changed points. The assistant of Department of Education thought that the changed system was related to students’ graduation, so the assistant uploaded the notice.” The member of Dharma College said, “Actually, the notice was planned to be uploaded later. Since the changed system will be applied from first semester in 2018, we thought that winter session was not relevant to the new system.”
In addition, according to the refund regulation, notified in the school website, the students who were taking the winter session could not receive full refunds since the class was already started. In regard to this, the member of Dharma College said, “To settle the problems, we made the student who were taking fourth ‘Great Books Seminar In Wisdom and Compassion’ can get full refunds. We sent the message and e-mail to them individually.”
Besides, there was a question whether the students who took fourth “Great Books Seminar In Wisdom and Compassion” in second semester in 2017 can withdraw their credits. Regard to this, the member of Dharma College said, “It is not possible to withdraw their credits of ‘Great Books Seminar In Wisdom and Compassion.’ The credits just remain in common liberal subject.”
