   On April 28th, a press conference regarding the actual qualification as a president of a university for President Han Tae-sik (Bogwang) was held by the Student Council of the College of Social Science. They required the reinvestigation of the plagiarism by President Han.

   For about three years of Dongguk University, students had doubt about whether someone who plagiarized can still be considered as a president. Also, there was a rising doubt dealing with the members of the Research Ethics Committee. The fact is that according to the order by the ministry of education, the process and specific details should have been notified to the informant. However, the press conference insisted that it did not work in that proper and the scrutiny done by the Research Ethics Committee turned out to be the process all done for the president.

  The press conference was mainly about the speeches made by students. The first one to make the speech was Kim Hee-Geon, the chairperson of Advertisement and Public Relations. He opened his speech with a statement saying that if this situation continues, then there would be no future for Dongguk University. He said, “In our university, there’s an egocentric president who plagiarized other scholars’ hard efforts.” He also pointed out that even the position of every single punctuation and the every footnote of the controversial thesis was exactly the same as that of the others. Back in 2015, even though the plagiarism turned out to be true, with the help of the Jogye order, Han Tae-sik (Bogwang) still became the president of Dongguk University. He ended his speech by saying that he’d like to encourage others to not to keep silent about the president’s case.

  Also, there was another student reading the paper referring to the case. Kim Jun-kyeom (Freshman, North Korea Studies) addressed about the fairness of the Research Ethics Committee. He stated, “Ever since Han Tae-sik (Bogwang) was appointed as a president, he kept on denying that he did forge others’ thesis and repeated his stance saying that we just have to wait for the result by the Research Ethics Committee. Also, the president considered 2015’s Research Ethics Committee as a flaw and restructured the Research Ethics Committee according to his taste. On top of this, the process of reconsideration and the date of reconsideration was not announced ahead to the informant. This is an explicit violation of the Ministry of Education’s instruction. “He ended by saying that it is a certain matter for National Research Foundation of Korea to make a decision to reinvestigate this case.

  Although students showed a firm demand to meet President Han, the school staffs did not allow them to do so since President Han was not available and their action could disturb other school staffs’ work. After long arguments about whether to go into the main hall or not, the school staffs made an agreement that they will send a document with the president’s stamp about the students requirements to the College of Social Science.
