On February 7th, Dongguk University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Angelicum University. For this event, the parties in relation to the Angelicum visited Dongguk University.
Angelicum (Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome) is a university under immediate control of the Vatican Palace. It takes a role as a pivot of Saint Thomas Christians theology and philosophical tradition.
Kwon Se-jin, the program coordinator of International Relations, said, “As the MOU was contracted, the exchange of students and professors became possible such as holding lectures in the short-term summer program. The two universities have not discussed concrete elements yet.”
On the same day, in accordance with the MOU between the two parties, a speech given by Priest Michael Fuss was held at the Buddhist sanctuary of Jeonggakwon at 11:00 A.M. The title was “The Catholic Church in Dialogue with Buddhism Dimensions of a Commitment to Peace”
Priest Fuss is a professor of Angelicum who teaches the history and theology of religion. Moreover, he has contributed to interaction with religions as a member of a “Nostra Aetate,” a declaration of the relationship between other religions and churches.
During the speech, Priest Fuss emphasized that communication with other religions is necessary. In addition, he commented that Catholics and Buddhists should do their best to communicate mutually in order to commit to peace.
Kim Ji-woo, the section chief of the Office of Public Relations, commented, “We could open the sluice gate of exchange between Buddhism and Catholic thanks to the MOU made between the two schools established by religion. Accordingly, exchanges in terms of academics and human resources will be continued with detailed discussions.”
