The true sense of the word “Democracy” was vague in Korea. The president Park Geun-hye has been connected with a personal loyalty in political matters. As the fact that the president’s decisions and official speeches were manipulated by a particular unknown was uncovered, the very foundations of the nation were shaken.
Every unjustifiable action of the president was revealed since she had played a part in the daughter of her friend being illicitly enrolled in Ewha Womans Unversity. Not only was Park dishonest as a president of a country, but also blindly relied on her friend, Choi Soon-sil, about every single matter to rule the country. With this issue, some say that Choi Soon-sil ordered and made Park Geun-hye to be a president to use Park as a means for her interest like a “Marionette.”
Disappointing news was reported ceaselessly. The prosecution deceived the public by doing spurious investigations for show. Several major leading corporations in Korea made a bargain with Choi and Park only for their interests. It was clear that Korea has been ruled only for a fortunate few at the very top.
The furious public started to express their rage towards the president by gathering and protesting for over a month. Regardless of age or sex, millions of people came all together to push back against the president, who is not qualified to lead Korea. The wrong ruling method of the president let people come together around their common political demand. The number of protestors was huge, compared to the past decades. This acted as a wake-up call for those who were indifferent in politics.
Barack Obama once said in a speech about democracy. “It (democracy) allows us to correct for mistakes. Any action by a president or any result of an election or any legislation that has proven flawed can be corrected through the process of democracy.”
Like he said, we proved ourselves that we surely have a power to make the country different. On December 9th, the presidential impeachment bill was passed by the National Assembly. We made it possible. As we came together and made a movement together, we could deliver on a brighter future for all of us.
