In September, the problem regarding the maintenance of core liberal subjects had
become a big controversy. The matter was caused by a text message sent to the students of
Dongguk University, which made many students concern about having problems graduating
from the school.
Core liberal subjects are included in the requirements for graduation. The course is made
up of four sections and students who entered Dongguk University in 2013 and before should
take a lecture in each section. However, the school sent a text message to the students
saying, “We are asking students who did not finish the core liberal subjects to take the
lectures during this semester. The course will not be opened from 2017.” On the Facebook
page “Dongguk Bamboo Forest,” regarding this matter, students stated that it is not certain
that they will be able to graduate from the school because they could not change their
timetables since the period of changing timetables for courses had almost finished.
However, the school did not take any action about how to deal with students who had not
took the courses yet before students revealed their opposition. Receiving such complaints
from the students, at last, the Dharma College, the department responsible for the courses,
clarified its position. It posted a notice on its webpage which announced that core liberal
subjects will remain until 2018 and there will be a sufficient number of lectures according to
the remaining students. After then, the lectures will be adjusted according to the prospective
students.
Kim Younghun, the head of Teaching and Learning of the Dharma College, said, “Any
disadvantage will not be given to the students because core liberal subjects will still remain in
2017.”
