On April 29th at 2:00 P.M., the General Student Council (GSC) and other members of Dongguk University held a press conference at the Paljung-do.
While the conference started off with some students having discussions on the issue, it gained more attention when Kim Young-ku, a graduate from the College of Buddhist Studies stated that the President Han Tae-sik (Bogwang) should resign from his position before the 18th of May, the day of Buddha´s Coming. Kim strongly explained that the reassignment is necessary because it is the only way the investigation on the case of plagiarism can proceed in a clean and fair manner. “Bogwang Sunim has already lost his right, not only as a President of a university but also as a Buddhist monk.” He declared.
The conference was concluded with the students making three final demands. First, a haste and just retrial on the 16 cases of plagiarism by Bogwang Sunim. Second, a consignment of the retrial to a professional associate that is exterior to the university, as for fairer judgments. Third, a reprimanding to the people who carry the responsibilities of time-wasting, such as appointing people as the members of the retrial committee, who are not qualified and instead, should have been excluded from the committee.
After a few unintended delays, the official papers of demands were given not to the President Han, as he was busy attending a meeting, but to Heo Nam-kyol, the head of the President’s department.
Meanwhile, An Dre, the chairperson of the GSC, stated that the next conference will be held on May 3rd in front of Jongyesa Temple.
