Race and Justice in America: OJ Simpson Case

   Fox network (FX) premiered the first 10-episode series of American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson in February-April. American Crime Story is based on the double murder trial of O.J. Simpson’s ex-wife Nichole Brown Simpson and her boy friend Ronald Goldman at Los Angeles on June 12th, 1994. The People vs. O.J. Simpson case has been one of the most famous criminal trials in American history. O.J. Simpson murder trial called “A great trash novel comes to life” was more dramatic than television shows.

   O.J. Simpson earned several awards and was a recipient of the Pro Football of Fame as a famous professional star player. Police collected enough evidence which indicates him as a murder suspect at a crime scene. He was charged with the murder of Nichole Simpson and Ronald Goldman and had police investigations. However, before the investigation, O.J. Simpson sent suicide notes to his family and friends, and ran away. It was one of the most famous rides in American history. Twenty police cars chased him on Los Angeles highways. Media covered the police chase of Simpson, and many viewers wondered how that scene would end. After the chase and arrest, O.J. Simpson had criminal trials. Prosecutors had sufficient evidence including DNAs, motives, and timelines to accuse him guilty. But, defense lawyers raised the possibility that he was framed by racist policemen.

   Finally, O.J. Simpson was sentenced as not guilty by the jury. An 100 million estimated people around the world stopped working and avoided the meetings to watch the sentence announcement. But, after the trial, CNN poll showed that 62 percent of white American believed that Simpson was guilty, while 66 percent  of African American supported the innocence of Simpson. Many people still believe that O.J. Simpson is guilty. O.J. Simpson murder case included money, race, abuse, and celebrities which have been major issues in the U.S..

   American Crime Story captured details about the O.J. Simpson murder case. This drama shows a variety of defense strategies to direct the murder trial as the issue of race and also, provides a varying point of views and conflicts behind the characters of defense lawyers and prosecutors. This drama reminds people with the painful reality about the race issues. Although, race should not be considered in making judgment, real life shows that race is a touchy and complex issue that may never find the middle ground in the modern society.
