Office of Information Carries Out Projects to Protect Personal Information

The Office of Information at Dongguk University has recently established Dongguk Education Information Service (DEIS) and is in the process of getting students’ agreement on collecting personal information. These two projects have been implemented in order to comply with Act on the Protection of Personal Information.

DEIS is the service which enables Donggukians to access their personal school information on the Web without installing uDrims. Students can access to the website of DEIS (dies.dongguk.edu) and check their information about university registration and the under graduate schedule with their uDrims ID and password.

The parents can also browse students’ data if the students register their parents’ cell phone number- registering parents’ phone numbers is optional. There will be no disadvantage for students who do not approve the registration of their parents.

Moon Sang-guk, the leader of the Information Management Team at the Office of Information, said “Sending mails to students is not allowed due to the protection of personal information. Furthermore, there will be cost cutting through this online service.”It has been in operation since the second semester of 2015 and is going to be extended to offering information about student’s grades. Therefore, students’ grades will not be mailed anymore from this semester.

Office of Information is also carrying out a project which is intended to obtain students’ approval on gathering personal information in one step. This project is also for observing the regulations about personal data and efficiency. According to the Information Protection Law, students’ personal data cannot be used for anything but educational purposes. For this reason, the Office of Information had to receive students’ information for all such occasions as scholarship, yearbook, group insurance, alumni meeting and so on.

However, getting students’ consent on information gathering for all school-related purposes will become operative from this year. Freshmen are going to indicate agreement with the school’s collection of data while looking up their timetable, and enrolled students will go through the process of agreement, doing lecture evaluations and inquiring their grades.
