Park Mun-soo, the chairperson of the General Representative Council, said, “The workshop was opened to increase faith towards the student council and for the sake of smooth progress of the business.” The workshop was divided into three parts: 1) University, Student Society, Student Council. 2) Ways to Build Relationships. 3) Business - Student Union Fees and Business Promotion.
In the first part of the workshop, “University, Student Society, Student Council,” the current problems that universities in Korea face, such as hierarchization, corporatization, and commercialization of universities were mentioned. It showed how they have changed the lives of university students in a way that pursues economic success. Then, the workshop examined what a student council is. Also, the need of student council bylaws was noted.
The second part of the program dealt with various discriminations, sexual abuses, and repressive measures that happen around campus. Lee Hyun-dam, the vice chairperson of the General Representative Council explained the purpose of this program, saying, “There are many case reports through Facebook webpage, ‘Dongguk University Bamboo Forest,’ regarding such issues.”
In this program, participants had a free discussion on their own uncomfortable experiences in school life. Jee You-jin, the sophomore departmental student representative of English Language and Literature, said, “Building relationships under oppressive drinking culture is inappropriate and should be abolished. We should find a way to help students build positive relationships with each other even without such oppressive culture.”
Lastly, the third part covered lessons on the operational accounting of student union fee for the managers of student councils. Each student council has to handwrite an account book and attach receipts for all the revenues and expenditures. Additionally, the GRC announced that it will publicize each college student council’s account book by posting QR codes connected to the online account books of Google Sheet. The chairperson Park asserted, “Keeping the transparency in money management is an essential part of the GSC’s affairs, which is directly related to gaining students’ trust.”
