On November 30th at 2:00 P.M., Choi Jang-hoon, the chairperson of the Student Council of Postgraduate, read out his announcement in front of the Main Hall where the hunger strike encampment is taking place.
He said, “It has been a year since this situation began in Dongguk University. The situation is getting to an extreme level with a student carrying on hunger strike for 47 days, professors for 21 days, and faculty for 15 days.”
Choi mentioned Kim Geon-jung, the vice chairperson of GSC who has been on hunger strike for 48 days, “I have heard numerous times that Kim Geon-jung can suffer from bowel and physical disability, will not be able to live an ordinary life, and can even die. If it really happens, who would be in responsible for that? I would not be able to feel free from that either.”
He urged Ven Ilmyun Sunim and Ven Bogwang Sunim to resign their dictatorships, and announced that “If the request proposal for the resignation of Ven Ilmyun Sunim and Ven Bogwang Sunim is not accepted on the board of directors, which is expected to be held on December 3rd, I will jump to my death.”
He emphasized that it is only the executive chief of the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order, Ven Ilmyun Sunim and President Han Tae-sik (Ven Bogwang Sunim) who can stop the hunger strike. He asked the students to appeal to the executive chief, Ven Ilmyun Sunim, and Ven Bogwang Sunim instead of persuading the chairperson Kim to stop the hunger strike.
