Here is a couple, Mi-sun and Jong-tae, agonizing over their decision to marry. They have been living together for over two years and deeply love each other. So Mi-sun wants to marry her lover without any delay. On the other hand, Jong-tae thinks over and over about it. Mi-sun is very precious to Jong-tae, but he is not sure if he wants to live with her forever.
Many middle-aged couples are bored with their marriages. Here are two such couples: Kang Ho-dong (Mi-sun's father) and Go Sun-ja (Jong-tae's mother), and Joo Eun-hye (Mi-sun's mother) and Kim Dae-moon (Jong-tae's father).
Mi-sun's father is immoral. He thinks that he is still attractive to ladies and cheats on his wife. On the other hand, Mi-sun's mother, Joo Eun-hye, is a saint. She goes to the movie theater alone every Friday night because her husband stays out all night. He says he likes to gamble. One day, Mrs. Joo meets Kim Dae-moon, Jong-tae's father, at the movie theater. He misses his first lover a lot. But Jong-tae's mother has a lot of sexual desire; so she meets her secret boy friend on Friday nights.
This story is the plot of the play Let's Get Married After Living Together (revised version, Sal-ah-bogo Gyel-hon-haja).
The play shows todays' confused sexual reality as well as the unsound culture surrounding our lives. It seems that traditional sexual ethics are collapsing very swiftly. The purity of single men and women for their future spouses is falling to pieces. Moreover, married people, who promised on their wedding day to live together in happy union till parted by death, stray from their spouses.
At the end of the play, Mi-sun and Jong-tae meet with their parents to discuss the marital problem. But confusion happens because of the two parents' cross acting. Mi-sun and Jong-tae return after the quarrel and realize their true love. Jong-tae proposes to his lover in front of the two families. Everything returns to normal.
How nice it would be if reality was that simple. But the play is only a play. There is no use crying over spilt milk. When real people fall into the same situation, they simply divorce. So people should think twice before doing something as immoral as having affairs.
The performance has been playing over 3000th stages. When the play was first performed, it did not have a good reputation because of the "premarital cohabitation," content. But now it is popular because of the changed consciousness among people.
Let's Get Married After Living Together provides people an opportunity to think about the sexual nature responsibility of marriage. Also, it can be a good guide to realizing the meaning of family as well as true love.
