GSC of Four Universities Combined to Urge Problem Solving in Universities

GSC of Dongguk University started to urge resolution of universities’ problems through the alliances with other universities. On November 3rd, GSC of Dongguk University, Kyungpook National University, Sangji University, and Cheongju University gathered and did the joint action called “The Joint Action of Students from Absurd Universities.”

As the first order of the joint action, GSC of Dongguk and other three universities held a press conference in front of the National Assembly at 1:00 P.M. They insisted that the government is responsible for the problems in Universities: electing of president, corruption of foundations and religious order, and university structural reform.

Chairperson Choi said that “Students are not the priority anymore when decisions about the school are made. Such shared thoughts led us to empathize each other and came to cooperate.” Each chairperson of the university noted disputes in their schools.

In addition, the joint action conveyed a protest letter to Part Joo-sun, the chairperson of Education, Culture, Sports, and Tourism Committee.

At 3:00 P.M. there was “Cultural Festival of Students from Absurd Universities” in front of Main Hall of Dongguk University. GSC of the four universities had a performance satirizing the situations in universities and reaffirm their resolution.

Kim Geon-jung, the vice chairperson of GSC, who started a hunger strike twenty days ago, said, “The most serious problem is that school does not listen to students. I will continue the strike until demands are accepted.”

They also did an activity, writing messages on the ground with the chalk. Participants wrote messages criticizing the situation and cheer for the GSC.

Bang Bo-kyeong, majoring Creative Writings said, “I support the struggle of the GSC, and I hope activities I did today would help them.”

Earlier in the day, There was the Central General Assembly of the Jogye order and GSC of Dongguk had a press conference about issues of President Han Tae-sik (Bogwang) and Chairperson Ilmyun in front of the Jogyesa Temple at 9:00 A.M.

Choi Kwang-baek, the chairperson of the GSC said, “Students has been fighting due to the irregularities of the President and the Chairperson. There must be something changed and solved inside the Jogye order, which is the very cause of problems of Dongguk.”

Son Sang-hun, the head of Center for Buddhist Ethics & Policy participated at the conference and said, “Jogye order should save its honor by the dismissal of President Han Tae-sik and Chairperson Ilmyun. Also, they ought to apologize to students of Dongguk openly.”
