The Conferment Ceremony of Honorary Doctorates for Congressman Charles Rangel and Saenuri Party Chairman Kim Moo-sung was held at the Main Auditorium on August 20th, 3:00 P.M. Before the conferment, students opposing the conferment for Chairman Kim assembled and opened a press conference.
The press conference began at 2:30 P.M. Park Mun-su, the chairperson of the College of Liberal Arts Student Council said, “I am doubtful about the intent of granting the degree to Kim who has political power. Dongguk University explained that Kim has contributed to the advancement in Korean politics, when Kim did only for his own political profits.”
Before the Conferment Ceremony of an Honorary Doctorate for Kim Moo-sung, Saenuri Party Chairman Representative and Charles Rangel, there was a demonstration of Donggukians against the conferment of an honorary doctorate on Kim Moo-sung in the rain.
Kim Geon-jung, the Vice Chairperson of the General Student Council, said in the conference, “Our alumni No Hee-du who fought at 4.19 Revolution and Ven Manhae Han Yong-un Sunim who participated in the independence movement will grieve for this situation,” and questioned, “in what reason a chairman of the present ruling party, who does not explain a single thing about the suspicions on him being pro-Japanese, Sewol ferry accident, NIS hacking, should receive the degree?”

Right after Kim arrived at Dongguk University at approximately 2:40P.M., there was a brawl among the staff of the school, reporters, and students. Kim Yong-Hyun, one of the students who participated in the demonstration, majoring English Language and Literature said, “This conferment devaluates students’ efforts to learn and study.”
In the conferment, Kim said “Receiving it probably means that I am obliged to help our country from the dark future,” and continued, “remembering Kim Koo and Rhee Sung-man, the heroes of Korea, we must have an united awareness of our history to develop Korea’s democracy.”
Chairman Kim was given an honorary doctorate for his contribution to the promotion of democracy in Korea and its politics. Congressmen Rangel received it for he has promoted rights and interests of the Korean-American community and has contributed to maintaining peace and stability on Korean peninsula. President Han Tae-sik (Bogwang) claimed, “Our two heroes’ accomplishments are great enough to serve as a model for Dongguk family and for sure will make further contribution to peace and prosperity in human race.”
