Dongguk University’s External Affairs and Development will host its first Annual Remembrance Climbing Tournament to commemorate the 30th anniversary of admission for the past graduates. The tournament will take place on April 25th at an experimental plantation owned by the university, located at Un-gil Mountain, in Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province. This year’s event will be conducted by the class of ’79. Donnguk University alumni from the class from ’79 to ’84 are welcomed to participate.
The Annual Remembrance Climbing Tournament is the extension of Homecoming Day-this year for the class of ’85, which has been held since 2009. Kim Young-min, a faculty of External Affairs and Development, said, “As a matter of fact, the idea of hosting the tournament came from the class of ’79.” The school has supported the idea by turning it into a formal event.” The main purpose is to bring the alumni together, which is not just limited to each class but from different classes including both seniors and juniors. These meet-ups will certainly encourage fellowship among the graduates and their continuing interest in the school. For these reasons, Dongguk is planning to host the tournament regularly, on the fourth Saturday of every April, rather than having it as a one-time event, since it could be useful in planning the upcoming 40th and 50th anniversaries of admission.
In order to decide on all the details of the event, representatives of each class had a meeting on Wednesday, March 11th. Approximately 150 alumni will be attending the tournament. The attendants may use public transportation, individual car, or two school buses which can carry about 80 people. The ceremony opens at 10:00 A.M. with the class of ’79 president’s greetings. After a warm-up exercise, attendants will hike for two and a half hours followed by lunch and recreation, closing at 4:00 P.M.
