Celebrating the 108th anniversary of Dongguk University, a Buddhist initiation ceremony was held on May 21st at Paljeongdo. In the past, several Buddhist initiation ceremonies took place by each college. This year, however, the Buddhist initiation ceremony was held for all Donggukians, including the alumni and faculty members. There were many changes in this year’s Buddhist initiation ceremony. First, the location of the Buddhist initiation ceremony was changed from Jeonggakwon to Paljeongdo, not only because more people participated but also because this ceremony was intended to commemorate the renovation of Buddha statue at Paljeongdo. Another difference was that, Jungryeon Sunim, Dongguk’s chairman of the board, hosted the ceremony instead of the usual host, Beobta Sunim, the head of Jeonggakwon. About one thousand people participated in the Buddhist initiation ceremony and they have received their own Buddhist name. Jungryeon Sunim gave a word on hoping to see the participants become true Buddhists through this ceremony and that Buddha’s mercy would bless all.
