When we are in high school, we cannot wait to walk around the campus and finally enjoy our stress-free lives in college. It all seems like a dream, full of exciting adventures ahead of us. Many students get to the campus with that same tingling feelings. With butterflies in our stomach, we start out on our freshman year. However, once students actually graduate from high school and enter college, the endless list of things that we had only imagined of doing simply remains a list of “things to do” when we get around to it. Then, what is a must in our college life, especially for our freshmen? Here are some tips on what freshmen should not miss out on.
Freshmen today are busy doing everything they can to get a head start from the first year. They work to get good grades and actively participate in various programs and extracurricular activities in preparation for their future. In this process, many students are missing out on the so-called “perks” of being a freshman. These are the certain privileges that college students can rightfully enjoy during their time they spend as students.
For starters, it is important to be open-minded about all the opportunities that students may come across in their campus life. Before holding back, students should be able to bear in mind the fact that the time to truly enjoy their time as students runs out more quickly than we tend to realize. There is a plenty of chance for students to enjoy their freshman year without having to give up their grades. Students, especially freshmen, have relatively more time to go traveling whether it is over the weekend or for an extended period of time during their vacation. This is an opportunity to make your own memories with the time that you have. Students do not have to hesitate from restraints that they would otherwise have to face when they work.
Also, freshman year is the time that students can meet all kinds of new people. Therefore, freshmen should make the most of it whether it is through blind dates or student clubs. This is an advantage of Korean students as blind date during the freshman year is a popular culture among Korean college students. In the freshman year, students often go out on blind dates together with their friends, where students are able to meet people from a different school or a different major.
In college, there are also various student clubs for students to choose from according to their taste. These student clubs are a place that freshmen can easily get to know different people on campus they would not otherwise be able to meet. They can form a close network with their seniors who tend to reach out to freshmen who are now adjusting to their new life on campus.
The thing is that it is often in the freshman or sophomore year that students are able to truly enjoy these opportunities as they are busy preparing for their future when they reach their third or fourth year of college. There are also particular activities of each school that students can enjoy. In the case of Dongguk University, there is a trail that leads up to Namsan. Students can walk up this trail after class and enjoy fried chicken and beer with friends. There, they can see cherry blossom trees in the spring and colorful autumn leaves in the fall.
Many of the senior students or graduates that now work tell us to “enjoy while you can.” At the same time, students today now seek to juggle their studies with their freshman life. There is a reason for this. Freshman year is the time, possibly the only time, you can do many different things we had only imagined of doing in college. Just do it!
