The proverb “silence is golden” is often used in circumstances where it is thought that saying nothing is preferable to speaking. It can be true at times. It is good to keep quiet from time to time. But that is only sometimes. When your rights are provoked, it is rather foolish to keep silence. If you do not stand up for yourself, you will be ceaselessly swayed by the outer pressure.
The student council has to play that role-the role of representing and speaking for all students in the school. If they don’t, the entire student body has to give in to irrationalisms and suffer. The student council has to communicate its opinion to the school on any subject that concerns students. What actions did the Golden Time take during the past months, or rather, in this school year for the students?
It seemed, at first, that the Golden Time was taking various actions. They performed picket demonstrations regarding the pension issues during last summer break. They conducted surveys on the students’ opinion of English classes. They prepared a college festival under the theme “communication.” They posted up hand-written posters saying that they will listen to every student’s opinion. They did a lot of things for the students. How come none of these touched our hearts?
The problem, I believe, lies in their lack of authenticity. They mentioned the importance of communication, but where were they when we really needed them? It is incomprehensible that it has to be so challenging to actually reach them. It is as if they are playing hide-and-seek with everyone on campus. They are so hard to catch that it feels like a man chasing after a girl.
What is even worse is their hobby of taking every credit to them. The school’s decision for reimbursing inappropriately used tuition, for instance, was made by the school because the Ministry of Education was going to cut on the budget provided to support school’s growth. Yet, the Golden Time put up posters saying that they were the ones who accomplished it. They asserted the idea that they led the school to make such decision. The Golden Time president’s leave of absence is needless to bring up as the talk of it has been done by many.
There is a saying that a person lives a life according to his name. The Golden Time is definitely doing a great job serving the quote. Their time, so much more precious than anyone else’s, is too golden to share. They clearly have expressed through various actions that they consider silence as golden. The quote they must learn and abide by, however, is “timing is everything”: Learn when and when not to speak, because you hold the responsibility to act as an official spokesperson for all the students of Dongguk University.
2013 is coming to an end and another student council will be elected in less than a month’s time. Before their time runs out, I hope to see the Golden Time actually communicating with students, face to face, instead of through Facebook or any other media, because we all know that is the most effective communication method. It would be a great pleasure if I ever get to meet the members in reality.
