Nam Sang-il, a renowned gukak (Korean classical music) artist who also completed a Master’s course at Dongguk University’s Graduate School of Cultural Arts, held a lecture on May 27th in Munhwa Hall’s Deokam Seminar Room. The purpose of the lecture was to establish cultural identity to university students. According to Kim Bong-ju, head of the administration office of the College of Arts, university students these days seem to be losing touch with the traditional values of Korea. The lecture was given in order to redefine the true value of traditional music for young generation and to provide knowledge that cannot be found elsewhere. The title of the lecture was “Mirthful Story of Our Sound” and it was held for about an hour. The students had a chance to ask questions to the acclaimed lecturer, who is widely known as a ‘Psy’ of Korean classical music genre. Nam used to be a member of National Changguk of Korea, a national scale performance company of chang, a Korean traditional narrative song. He also gained popularity by appearing in various TV shows, such as KBS ‘The Qualities of a Man.’
