Technically, smoking is still legal in nearly every country in the world but just because people can smoke, it doesn’t mean they should ? especially as the only reasons why governments allow it are selfish or cowardly. Governments make additional revenue from cigarette sales, some politicians and political parties accept donations from tobacco lobbyists and many political parties are afraid that if they ban smoking entirely, they will face a backlash in future elections due from angry ex-smokers.
All these dubious reasons are ignore the real issue at stake, which is that cigarette smoke is extremely dangerous to people’s health as it contains carcinogens ? terrible substances which can cause cancer. To name just a few dangers from cigarette smoke, it can cause lung cancer, throat cancer and heart disease.
Now, some smokers believe that if they want to harm themselves, then that’s their choice. That is a rather selfish attitude which shows little regard for their friends and families but the real truth is much more frightening. When smokers choose to harm themselves, they are also harming everyone around them ? perhaps even more so as second hand smoke is believed to be the most dangerous kind. If you smoke, make no mistake: you are harming other people. Cigarette smoke drifts in the air and can spread over large areas, it can seep through floors in buildings and gaps in windows and it stays in the air long after a smoker finishes their cigarette. It causes discomfort to others, it can seriously affect their health and it can even lead to life-threatening illnesses. Deliberately harming other people is a form of assault, which is why smoking should be illegal.
Therefore, why do people do it? Why do very young people do it? The terrible effects of smoking have been well-documented for several decades. Anyone born after 1970 should know better. Yet, here in Korea, there are thousands of people born after 1990 who have taken up this filthy and completely useless habit. It doesn’t satisfy thirst or hunger. It doesn’t help people to relax; many smokers believe it does but it actually raises people’s blood pressure.
If you smoke yourself, then you really ought to think long and hard about why you’re doing it. Is it to look cool or more grown-up? If it is, then I have news for you. Smoking does not look cool, intelligent, mature or any of those things. When people smoke, they look unintelligent because they are deliberately inhaling carcinogens. They look inconsiderate because they are not thinking about the people around them. They look weak because they addiction is a weakness… and they stink.
We have a pleasant campus at Dongguk University and many students are very polite and friendly. Unfortunately however, there are a number of students who spoil the campus environment for the rest of us ? smoking in doorways, next to classroom windows, air conditioning vents and even smoking in the bathrooms. If you are one of these students, I have this to say: JUST STOP IT.
All our actions have the potential to affect others. To be the best we can be, we should strive to make sure that we have only positive affects on those around us. Let’s work together to make Dongguk University a smoke-free campus.
