|Department of Computer Science and Engineering received ABEEK certification.|
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering received a six-year-old certification from this year. This six-year-old certification is called ABEEK (Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea). It is the second time that Dongguk has received the six-year-old ABEEK certification.
ABEEK’s goal is to guide education programs in several universities and certificate universities’ programs and curriculum. As a result, ABEEK is trying to develop universities’ engineering education. The process of ABEEK is a complicated and difficult one. One year beforehand the university hoping to receive certification must apply. Around two months later, ABEEK then chooses who will be the judges of the testing process term. After that, each university attempts to show how great their programs and curriculums are. Also, each university’s departments get an evaluation and get certificates. They are called the NGR (Next General Review) and IV(Interim Vistit). The NGR gives an A, B, or C to each department and in their evaluation, Dongguk received A. Finally, in December, ABEEK gives each the certifications to the winning universities. Due to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering having received the six-year-old ABEEK certification, the students in that department will be verified as being great and talented individuals. In addition, this may mean that companies will give benefits to these students in the future.
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering was not the only one to receive the certification. There were five other departments as well. They include the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Industrial & Systems Engineering, Aerospace and Life Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. These five departments were received IV certification and as a result received three-year-old ABEEK certifications.
These days Dongguk University has been trying a lot of things to spread the word of success of how the College of Engineering has developed and is making good progress. Choi Yun-hee, a researcher from the Innovation Center for Engineering Education, said, “I know that there are many people who do not know how meaningful this is. It is hard to express and explain for me also. However, I really want to say that getting the ABEEK’s six-year-old certification was very difficult.” She added that she hoped other Dongguk students would appreciate how much the College of Engineering is trying to develop.
To maintain this certification, each department must be evaluated again. For the three-year-old certification, each department must go through the ABEEK process in their second year and for the six-year-old certification in their fifth year.
