Diverse Celebrations in Dongguk University

Recently, there have been a lot of celebrations at Dongguk to enlighten the image of the university. One of the most recent festivals, ‘The Dongbul Lotus festival’ was held by the Buddhist department to celebrate the 106th anniversary of the founding of Dongguk University. Because of support from the university, the diversity of the festival expanded from previous years’ events. Moreover, the number of participants increased by 50% compared to last year, making this event the most successful to date. According to Lee Jun Kwon, the leading student organizer of the festival, the festival was the largest event put on by the students of the Department of Buddhist Studies, as large numbers of students from other majors participated in the festival and the events. Moreover, as the festival was celebrated and event that was significant for the school itself, he noted that he felt proud to be a part of it. He also mentioned some of the changes in the organization of the festival to help it attract more students to participate. Such changes included selling refreshments and playing music at the center of the festival. The money gathered from the festival was donated to both the poor and “Beautiful Companion”, an organization which opens volunteer works for the students to participate in. Apart from this festival, other carnivals have also been held to make student life at Dongguk University exciting such as the ‘Mokmyuk Singing Contest’ and the ‘Dongyun festival’.
