Global mindedness and foreign language skills were highlighted as two major weaknesses among graduates of Dongguk University according to the Satisfaction of University Education Curriculum and Enterprise Performance Ability Survey carried out by Research & Research, Inc. A total of 872 Dongguk University graduates and 240 corporate human resource directors participated in the survey from July to August 2011.
Dongguk University graduates received scores of 54.5 and 54.2 out of 100 for global mindedness and foreign language skills, respectively. They scored higher in other areas, including 62.1 for expertise in major areas, the highest score reported, followed by 62.0 in computer literacy, according to the human resource directors.
Regarding Dongguk University’s image, as evaluated by the directors, the university received the lowest score (50.0) for having a developed international university image, compared to its image for possessing fixed operating rules (64.5).
According to the survey, 89% of graduates have taken the TOEIC, and 83% of them have job skill certificates. However, their score for taking the TOEIC Speaking Test is low (42.6).
The human resource directors stated that the university needs to strengthen students’ global capacities and self-development abilities in cultural studies. The graduates thought they needed a score of about 62.7 for speaking foreign languages, but their ability is 51.4, and the university’s contribution score is just 40.7. That is to say, the directors and graduates both agreed to the need for improvements in foreign language abilities and global mindedness.
The Center for Foreign Language Education (CFLE) is dedicated to enhancing students’ foreign language skills and multicultural awareness. They operate the Academic Foundation Program (AFP), which aims to improve students’ speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, and English Study Tutoring (EST), a special program which offers customized classes to small groups of students. The CFLE also runs the English Zone and the English Clinic, where students can practice their English conversation skills and receive one-on-one language assistance. A consulting program with foreign professors and a monthly practice TOEIC test are also offered.
The university offers other helpful services. Currently, the participation rate in the Dongguk 108 Leaders Program is very low (8.2%), but the satisfaction rate is quite high (82.5). The goal of this program is to develop global leaders through various social experiences. The HRDP Job Camp also shows high rates of satisfaction and low rates of participation.
