Celebrity alumni show support for acting majors

Celebrities who graduated from Dongguk University have decided to donate one billion won to acting majors in the Department of Theater and Film. A total of 20 celebrities, including Lee Hyo-jung, the president of the department’s alumni association, Lee Duk-hwa, Chae Jung-an, and Lee Kyung-gyu, offered to donate money to the newly established Love Junior Scholarship Fund. Each year, these famous actors and entertainers will donate five million won each. Thus, over the course of their 10-year commitment, students in the theater department will receive one billion won. The scholarships will be offered mainly to 20 seniors who will receive 2.5 million won each, which amounts to more than half of their tuition for one semester. Next month, the famous donors will each hold a special audition to select students for the scholarships. Since the scholarships will be offered to 20 students each semester, a total of 40 students will receive scholarships in the theater department, which currently has a total of 50 students. The celebrities, all of whom attended the scholarship fund opening ceremony, have shown deep concerns about the cost of rising tuition, which is a highly controversial issue in Korea these days. They urged other Dongguk University alumni to lend a helping hand to students in other departments who are also experiencing financial hardship.
