Prospective teachers cry out for 'True Education'College of Education students stand together for expressing their belief

College of Education students’ voices were throughout Inha University on October 9th.  The National Education College Student Alliance (NCESA) is an organization that was inspired by ‘subject training special process' released in 2009.  It was created for the common causes and demands of all College Education majors. Other organizations existed before the NCESA was formed, however students felt that they needed the power of unity because they wanted to have a strong influence against the Korean government. As a result the NCESA became the new front from which students could band together in a common cause.

'Subject training special process legislation' was a plan initiated by the Korean government in which teachers could receive their teaching license by working with College of Education students.  The government insists that this is the most effective way to train teachers.  However, the NCESA decided that the College of Education is not an institution which should give licenses to teachers but rather a stepping stone to becoming a teacher. Some noticeable problems are the short training time as well as high competition rate for teacher certification, which has risen because of ‘subject training special process legislation'.

Recently the government announced the investigation of ideas which will help students reduce the demands placed on them. Some of these include time constraints, excessive class time and administrative responsibilities.  The NCESA  said "This policy has inside facts which could help by reducing investigative or non-major subjects and reinforcing main or major subjects.  However, this encourages private education and causes an even greater burden to students. Therefore, this policy shouldn't take effect."

The NCESA is worried about governmental policies such as 'subject training special process legislation', 'legal teacher's secure rate 80%' and 'A reform bill of the scholastic ability test, 2014'.  The NCESA is struggling to prevent privatized education as well as competition caused by expanding a main subjects-centered idea of education.  One of the policies that NCESA considers as a big problem is the expanding of the number of short-term teachers. A short-term teacher is a temporary teacher who has a teacher's certificate. NCESA insists that the swelling the number of short-term teachers affects not only dwindling number of hiring new teachers but people's prejudice on short-term teachers. Park Sung-yeun (Dept. of Education) said, “We (NCESA) think that students can loose faith about teacher. Because the short-term teachers must finish the educating students within the term limit.”  Jin Su Young from the Department of Chinese Education in Sungkyunkwan University is an executive board member of NCESA. She said "If these governmental educational policies aren't improved, the future of Korea's education will be bleak. University students don't view bad policy with folded arms, but rather want to cooperate to change it for the better. We will move for public education's normalization and the improvement of educational conditions. The government has to enhance the quality of public education by increasing teacher-student ratio, having small-scale classes, and by varying activities and integrating combination learning. The goal of education isn't simply to do well on the university entrance examination. The government must make policies aimed at academic ability rather than simply for achieving good results on a test. Student knowledge can be gained from various experiences other than test-taking and cutthroat competition.”

The government has thus far had no reaction to the NCESA. However, they continue to hold fast to their own views without regard to the government's attitude. Every move by NCESA is drawing the National College of Education students and people who are preparing to take a teacher certification examination's attention.
The NCESA plans to hold a conference of delegates in which members of the organization gather in order to nominate and elect a chairperson and will organize the central management committee.

Jin Su-young added that the "NCESA is still in early an establishment stage, so plans are not entirely clear yet. The more students join together and become members of the NCESA, the more rapidly and effectively educational services and campus improvements will be made. Through activities like a peace rallies, indignation meetings and, the camp for NCESA members we will continue to make our opinions known."
